AI citation tracker

The AI citation-tracker MCP + API: are your URLs getting cited by AI? Citations are the new backlinks.

Google's backlink graph is fading; AI citation graphs are forming. Pass any URL to /v1/citations, get back the prompts that surface it, the models that cite it, and the frequency. Decide which pages to refresh, which to archive, and where to invest in new content.

WHAT YOU CAN ASK

Ask in plain language. Get structured JSON.

Each is one call against the endpoint, ask in plain English through the MCP, or hit the API directly. Same key, same credit balance.

You ask“Is my blog post getting cited by AI?”
You get{ "cited": true, "prompts": 3, "citations": 4 }
You ask“Which models cite this URL, and how much?”
You get{ "by_model": { "chatgpt": 3, "perplexity": 4 } }
You ask“Where does my rival get cited and I don’t?”
You get{ "gap_prompts": ["best ai blog tool", "seo vs aeo"] }
Why citations beat backlinks

Backlinks measured the last web. AI citations measure this one.

A backlink tool tells you who linked to a page. It says nothing about whether ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or Gemini treats that page as a source worth quoting. Those are two different graphs, and only one of them is growing. Pass any URL to /v1/citations and get back the prompts that surface it, the models that cite it, and how often, in one JSON shape.

A page can rack up backlinks and still be invisible inside AI answers. The reverse is true too: a thin post can get cited four times on Perplexity for the exact category prompts your buyers ask. /v1/citations checks all four models at once so you see the citation graph that actually feeds AI answers, not a proxy from the Google era.

  • See per-model citation counts, not a single blended score.
  • Diff a URL against a competitor's to find the prompts where they get cited and you don't.
  • Re-run the same URL after a refresh and measure the citation delta.

vs. a backlink monitoring tool

Track AI citations, not the inbound links that no longer move AI rankings.

Ahrefs and Semrush tell you who linked to a page. Useful for the Google-era ranking graph, useless for knowing whether a model considers your URL a credible source. Citations are the inbound reference that AI answers are actually built from. Same question, are people finding this page, two different graphs.

QUESTIONS

Questions about ai citations.

Backlinks are dropping in importance for AI search ranking. What matters is whether a model considers your URL a credible source. AI citations are the leading indicator of that, a URL that's cited in 4 ChatGPT answers for category prompts is, by definition, ranking in AI search.
Yes. Perplexity gives you a citation list per answer; ChatGPT names sources inline. Cite42 captures both forms and normalizes them into a single "cited" field.
Each /v1/citations call runs in real time against current model APIs. No stale crawl indices. Costs $0.05 per model per URL, $0.20 to check across all four, or $0.05 against a single model.
Yes, pass an array of URLs. Each one costs $0.05 per model per call ($0.20 across all four). For ongoing monitoring of a URL set, run the checks from a cron job (or have your MCP agent run them on a schedule) and diff the results.
Backlink tools track inbound links from other websites. AI citation tools track inbound references from AI models. Two completely different graphs, both worth monitoring.
