The best DataForSEO alternatives in 2026: pricing, MCP and APIs compared

Alexander
Founder, Cite42

Compare DataForSEO alternatives for SERP, keyword and AI data: SerpApi, Serper, SE Ranking, Ahrefs, Semrush, Keywords Everywhere and Cite42, with prices.

A branch splitting into two paths

The best DataForSEO alternative depends on which DataForSEO API you use. For search results, SerpApi and Serper.dev are simpler to start with. For a broad SEO API on pay-as-you-go credits, SE Ranking is the closest match. Ahrefs, Semrush and Serpstat make sense if you already pay for one of those suites, Keywords Everywhere is a cheap source of keyword volumes, and Cite42 gives you keyword volumes, Google Trends and AI visibility checks per call, through REST or MCP, with no subscription.

Cite42 publishes this guide. We researched every other service from its official documentation and pricing pages on October 6, 2026, without paid test calls.

DataForSEO pricing and MCP: what you're replacing

DataForSEO is a pay-as-you-go SEO data API with no subscription and a $50 minimum payment. Each API has its own price. As of October 2026, a Google Ads search volume task takes up to 1,000 keywords and costs $0.06 in the standard queue or $0.09 in live mode. DataForSEO Labs (keyword ideas, difficulty and intent) starts at about $0.01 per request plus $0.0001 per returned item, and the LLM Mentions API costs $0.10 per request plus $0.001 per row. SERP, backlink, on-page, business and domain data APIs sit in the same account.

The DataForSEO MCP server is official and open source. You can point an MCP client at the remote endpoint https://mcp.dataforseo.com/v3/mcp or run it locally with npx, and it authenticates with your API login and password. Its calls bill like any other DataForSEO request, across the SERP, keyword, Labs, backlink, on-page and AI Optimization APIs.

People usually look for an alternative for one of three reasons: the $50 first payment is large for a small project, the task-based API returns detailed JSON that takes work to parse, or they only need one slice of the data, such as Google results or keyword volumes.

The best DataForSEO alternatives for different jobs

  • Cite42: keyword volumes, Google Trends and AI visibility per call over REST or MCP, with no subscription.
  • SerpApi and Serper.dev: Google results as JSON for rank tracking or search features.
  • SE Ranking: keywords, backlinks, audits and AI visibility on pay-as-you-go credits.
  • Ahrefs, Semrush and Serpstat: data from an SEO suite you already pay for.
  • Keywords Everywhere: the lowest cost per keyword for volume lookups, with an official MCP server.
  • Google Ads API: Keyword Planner data from the source, once Google approves access.
  • DataForSEO itself: backlinks, on-page data and very large keyword jobs.

AI assistants name a similar list. When we asked "What are the best alternatives to DataForSEO for a solo developer who needs SEO data?" on October 6, 2026, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini all named SerpApi, and two of the three named each of Serper.dev, SE Ranking, Ahrefs and Bright Data.

Cite42 is a pay-per-call API and MCP server that covers three DataForSEO jobs a solo developer often needs: keyword volumes, Google Trends and brand mentions in AI answers. There is no subscription and no monthly fee. You top up a prepaid balance (minimum $25.00), the balance never expires, and you pay only for successful calls. A verified signup adds $1.00 of free credit.

Keyword volumes come from Google Ads Keyword Planner, so you get Keyword Planner numbers without your own Google Ads API approval. A batch of 2 to 50 keywords costs $0.09, and a single keyword with up to 50 related ideas costs $0.12. A Google Trends request costs $0.05. AI visibility checks run your own prompt live on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, from $0.08 on ChatGPT and Perplexity to $0.20 across all five.

Every tool works over REST at https://www.cite42.dev/api/v1/... and through the hosted MCP server at https://mcp.cite42.dev, which signs in with OAuth from Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Codex and Cursor. In Claude Code it is one command: claude mcp add --transport http --scope user cite42 https://mcp.cite42.dev.

Pros

  • One account and one bill for keyword volumes, Trends and AI answers, with a $25.00 minimum top-up instead of a $50 first payment.
  • Flat JSON: one row per keyword with its status, volume, CPC and paid competition.
  • Hosted MCP with OAuth sign-in, so Claude or ChatGPT can call it without an API key in a config file.

Cons

  • No SERP, backlink, on-page or keyword difficulty data.
  • Trends and AI Overviews data comes through DataForSEO, so those two add no protection against a DataForSEO outage.
  • At thousands of keywords a month, DataForSEO's 1,000-keyword tasks cost less per keyword than Cite42's 50-keyword batches.

A small research job shows the scale Cite42 is built for: 24 keywords, one Trends term in two countries and three buyer prompts on ChatGPT and Perplexity cost $0.43 at current prices. Our full research for this blog on October 5, 20 paid calls, cost $3.46, and every input and charge is in the evidence file.

SerpApi and Serper.dev: search results only

SerpApi and Serper.dev replace DataForSEO's SERP API. You send a query and get the results page back as structured JSON, which suits rank tracking, SERP features and search inside your own product.

SerpApi's pricing starts with 250 free searches a month, then $25 a month for 1,000 searches, $75 for 5,000 and $150 for 15,000, and you can cancel anytime. Serper.dev covers Google search, images, news, maps, places, videos, shopping, scholar, patents and autocomplete. It gives 2,500 free queries without a credit card, then sells prepaid packs from $50 for 50,000 credits ($1.00 per 1,000) down to $0.30 per 1,000 on its largest pack, with credits valid for six months. For very large scraping jobs, Bright Data's SERP API charges $1.50 per 1,000 requests on pay-as-you-go.

Pros

  • One request, one JSON response, with free allowances to build against.
  • Serper.dev's packs are among the cheapest per query, with no monthly plan.

Cons

  • Search results only: keyword volumes, backlinks and Trends data need another provider.

SE Ranking: the closest all-round replacement

SE Ranking's API covers most of what developers use DataForSEO for: keyword research with volume, CPC, difficulty, intent and monthly trend for up to 5,000 keywords per request, plus backlinks, domain data, site audits and an AI Visibility API covering Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, ChatGPT and Perplexity. Billing uses pay-as-you-go credits from $50 for 250,000, new users get a 100,000-credit trial, and an MCP server connects the data to Claude and other assistants.

SE Ranking was also the alternative AI assistants named most often in our October 5 check of the same question, appearing in four of five answers.

Pros

  • Breadth close to DataForSEO's, including keyword difficulty and AI visibility, without a suite subscription.
  • A free trial large enough to test real requests.

Cons

  • Each operation uses a different number of credits, so convert your workload into credits before comparing.
  • AI visibility research data refreshes monthly.

Ahrefs, Semrush and Serpstat: APIs from an SEO suite

If you already pay for an SEO suite, its API may cover what you were buying from DataForSEO.

  • Ahrefs: the Ahrefs API returns keyword volume and difficulty, backlinks and SERP data. It's available from the Lite plan, each request uses at least 50 API units from your plan's monthly allowance, and the Ahrefs MCP server draws from the same allowance. Test queries against ahrefs.com and a few other set domains are free on paid plans.
  • Semrush: the Standard API is an add-on to the Business tier of its SEO Toolkit. Your unit balance starts at zero and you buy packages of 2 to 20 million units. Its official MCP server also works on lower plans that include 50,000 API units.
  • Serpstat: the API starts on the Team plan at $100 a month, uses JSON-RPC 2.0, and charges one credit per returned row.

Pros

  • Ahrefs and Semrush bring their own large backlink and keyword indexes, plus a web app for checking results by hand.
  • An API you already pay for adds no new vendor.

Cons

  • A subscription comes before the first call, and Semrush's REST API needs a unit package on top.
  • Unit costs vary by report, so cost per keyword is harder to predict than DataForSEO's per-task prices.

Keywords Everywhere: cheap keyword volumes on annual credits

Keywords Everywhere sells annual credit plans: Bronze is $84 a year for 100,000 credits, and one credit returns the volume, CPC, competition and 12-month trend for one keyword. Its REST API and official MCP server at https://mcp.keywordseverywhere.com/mcp use the same credits as the browser extension. The MCP server signs in with OAuth in ChatGPT and VS Code and takes your API key in other clients, and it also returns related keywords, domain keywords, traffic estimates and backlinks.

Pros

  • Under a tenth of a cent per keyword on the Bronze plan, with a monthly trend included.
  • The same credits work in the browser extension, the API and MCP.

Cons

  • Plans are billed annually, and credits expire one year after purchase.

If keyword volumes are all you need, Google's own API is free. Its historical metrics method returns average monthly searches, a monthly series for the past 12 months, competition and bid estimates. Access now starts in the Google Cloud Console, because Google sunset developer tokens on September 9, 2026. Keyword Planner services need Basic access, which requires brand verification of your Cloud project and an approved application. The keyword research API comparison covers this route in more detail.

When DataForSEO is still the better choice

DataForSEO remains the better fit for several jobs:

  • You need backlinks, on-page crawls, business data and Labs datasets from one account.
  • You check thousands of keywords a month. A $0.09 live task covers up to 1,000 keywords, which beats per-batch pricing at that volume.
  • You want the LLM Mentions database of collected AI answers rather than live checks on your own prompts. The AI visibility API comparison covers that choice.
  • Your code already handles its task format.

Before you switch, test these four things

  1. Run the same keywords, country and language through both services and compare the rows.
  2. Keep the requested keyword separate from any variant or alternative a service returns. Our check of "claude code keyword research with cite42" returned no_data plus broader alternatives such as "ai coding assistant", and the alternative's volume says nothing about the original phrase.
  3. Store missing values as null. A missing CPC is an unknown cost, and missing volume is different from zero searches.
  4. Price your real monthly volume, including any minimum payment, plan fee and per-request charge.
