The best SEO MCP servers in 2026: Semrush, Ahrefs, DataForSEO and more

Alexander
Founder, Cite42

Compare the best SEO MCP servers for Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor: Semrush, Ahrefs, DataForSEO, SE Ranking, Keywords Everywhere, Keyword Tool and Cite42.

Three cable plugs with loosely gathered cables

If you already pay for Ahrefs or Semrush, start with their official MCP servers: both bring keyword, backlink and domain data into Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor, metered against the API units in your plan. DataForSEO's open-source server lets an agent call any DataForSEO API on pay-as-you-go billing, and SE Ranking packs more than 160 tools, including site audits and AI search data. Keywords Everywhere and Keyword Tool focus on keyword volume, with Keywords Everywhere the cheapest way in, and Cite42 charges per call for keyword volume, Google Trends and AI visibility checks, with no subscription.

This guide compares those seven SEO MCP servers on the data they return, how you connect them and what you pay, with each server's Claude Code setup command. Cite42 publishes it. We checked every server's official documentation and pricing pages on October 6, 2026; the Cite42 examples are real calls, and the others were researched from their documentation without paid test accounts.

Which SEO MCP servers AI assistants recommend

On October 5, 2026 we asked ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews "What are the best SEO MCP servers for Claude and ChatGPT?" Among the brands we tracked, Ahrefs was named in all five answers, DataForSEO and SE Ranking in three, and Semrush in two. The answers cited "best SEO MCP" roundups from ContextBolt, SEOptimer, SE Ranking and keyword.com, plus GitHub repositories (full responses).

A day later we asked ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini "What MCP servers give Claude Code real keyword search volume data?" Alongside the big suites, they named Keywords Everywhere, Keyword Tool, DataForSEO, a community Google Keyword Planner server and ContextBolt. This guide covers those names, plus Cite42.

Cite42 is a pay-per-call API and MCP server for keyword research, Google Trends and AI visibility. There's no subscription and no monthly fee: you top up a prepaid balance (minimum $25.00), the balance never expires, and you pay only for successful calls. A verified signup adds $1.00 of free credit.

Keyword results give real monthly search volume, CPC and paid-search competition. One keyword with volume costs $0.09, one with related ideas $0.12, a batch of 2 to 50 keywords $0.09, and a Google Trends lookup $0.05. The same connection runs your prompts on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews and reports which brands and sources each answer named, from $0.01 per AI tool or $0.20 for all five.

Pros

  • You pay only for successful calls, and a 50-keyword batch costs $0.09.
  • Keyword volume and live AI answer checks in one server, so you can compare Google demand with what ChatGPT or Claude recommends.
  • The REST API has the same tools, so a check you try in Claude can move into a script.

Cons

  • No organic keyword difficulty, backlink index or site crawler.
  • No Search Console connection or rank tracking for your own site.

Setup: claude mcp add --transport http --scope user cite42 https://mcp.cite42.dev, then claude mcp login cite42. The Claude Code SEO tutorial covers Codex, API keys and a full research session.

Ahrefs MCP is a hosted server at https://api.ahrefs.com/mcp/mcp for users on a Lite plan or higher. Its tool groups cover Site Explorer (backlinks, referring domains, organic keywords, top pages), Keywords Explorer, SERP overviews, Rank Tracker, Site Audit, Brand Radar, Web Analytics and Google Search Console, and a ?tools= parameter limits which groups your client loads.

MCP calls use the monthly API units in your plan, the same as direct API usage. The Ahrefs MCP page lists rows per request from 100 on Lite to unlimited on Enterprise; see Ahrefs pricing for current plan prices.

Pros

  • Ahrefs' backlink and keyword data plus your Site Audit, Rank Tracker and Brand Radar projects in one connection.
  • Admins can cap each key's monthly API units.

Cons

  • Needs a paid plan, and the row cap per request is lowest on Lite.
  • Ahrefs' terms limit the MCP endpoint to AI clients. Custom scripts must use the Ahrefs API.

Setup: claude mcp add ahrefs https://api.ahrefs.com/mcp/mcp -t http, then authenticate from /mcp.

Semrush MCP: SEO and traffic data on eligible plans

Semrush MCP is a hosted server at https://mcp.semrush.com/v2/mcp with OAuth sign-in, or an API key for clients without OAuth. Its tools include domain overview, organic research, keyword research, competitors, backlinks, traffic, paid search, position tracking and site audit, with project data available read-only.

SEO data needs Semrush One Starter or Pro+, or SEO Classic Pro or Guru, which include 50,000 API units; Business and Advanced plans need an API units package. Traffic and market data need a separate Trends API plan. Requests use the same API units as the Semrush API, with no additional MCP fee. See Semrush pricing for current plan prices.

Pros

  • Semrush's keyword, backlink and competitor data without exporting reports.
  • An official connector in Claude and ChatGPT, and setup guides for Cursor, VS Code and Perplexity.

Cons

  • Plan rules are layered: SEO data, traffic data and API units each have their own requirements.
  • Projects are read-only through MCP.

Setup: claude mcp add semrush https://mcp.semrush.com/v2/mcp -t http.

DataForSEO MCP: any DataForSEO API, pay as you go

DataForSEO's MCP server is open source (Apache-2.0). Version 3 gives the agent four tools: three for reading DataForSEO's API documentation and an api_request tool that calls any endpoint, from the SERP API and Keywords Data (including Google Ads search volume) to Labs, Backlinks, On-Page and AI Optimization. The hosted server at https://mcp.dataforseo.com/v3/mcp signs in with OAuth, and npx dataforseo-mcp-server runs it locally with your API login and password.

Calls are ordinary API requests on your account, billed pay as you go with no subscription and a $50 minimum payment on DataForSEO's pricing page.

Pros

  • Every DataForSEO dataset through one server that's free to run or host yourself.
  • Pay-as-you-go billing at API rates.

Cons

  • The agent finds the right endpoint in the docs before each new kind of request, which adds steps compared with task-specific tools.
  • Prices differ by endpoint, so estimate a job from the pricing pages first.

Setup (local, from DataForSEO's Claude Code guide): claude mcp add dfs-mcp --env DATAFORSEO_USERNAME=<api_username> --env DATAFORSEO_PASSWORD=<api_password> -- npx -y dataforseo-mcp-server.

SE Ranking MCP: research, audits and AI search in one server

SE Ranking's MCP server at https://api.seranking.com/mcp exposes more than 160 tools for keyword research, backlinks, domain analysis, website audits, AI search (overviews, leaderboards, prompt tracking) and project management. It signs in with OAuth or an API key and lists setup guides for Claude, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, Zed and Gemini CLI.

The API page says MCP access is included in every SE Ranking plan, and pay-as-you-go API credits start at $50 for 250,000. Each operation uses a different number of credits.

Pros

  • The widest tool set here, including audits and rank tracking projects you can manage from the assistant.
  • AI search data covering Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Cons

  • API access lives on the master account; sub-account keys are still to come.
  • Credit costs vary by operation, which makes a job harder to price up front.

Setup: claude mcp add --transport http se-ranking https://api.seranking.com/mcp.

Keywords Everywhere MCP: low-cost Keyword Planner volumes

Keywords Everywhere's MCP server at https://mcp.keywordseverywhere.com/mcp returns keyword metrics (volume, CPC, competition and a 12-month trend), keyword ideas, the keywords a site ranks for, traffic estimates and backlinks. Its page says search volume comes from Google Keyword Planner. ChatGPT and VS Code sign in with OAuth; Claude Code and other clients send your API key as a bearer token.

Every data call uses credits (one per keyword returned), and all methods work on every plan. Plans are billed yearly from $84 for 100,000 credits (Bronze), and credits last one year.

Pros

  • The lowest entry price here for Keyword Planner volumes.
  • Domain keywords, traffic and backlinks in the same server.

Cons

  • Annual billing only, and unused credits lapse after a year.
  • API-key setup in Claude Code, so the key sits in your client config.

Setup: claude mcp add --transport http keywords-everywhere https://mcp.keywordseverywhere.com/mcp -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_KE_API_KEY".

Keyword Tool MCP: Google and Bing keyword discovery

Keyword Tool's MCP server at https://mcp.keywordtool.io returns keyword suggestions, search volume, CPC, competition and trends for Google and Bing, with volumes it attributes to Google and Bing Keyword Planner data. You sign in with your Keyword Tool account through OAuth. The web interface and REST API cover 16 platforms, but MCP covers Google and Bing only.

Every Keyword Tool plan includes MCP access, from $88 a month (Starter, 50 requests a day) to $788 (Agency, 400 a day), with lower annual prices. The web app, API and MCP share one daily quota.

Pros

  • Bing volumes as well as Google.
  • OAuth sign-in and setup guides for most MCP clients.

Cons

  • A monthly or annual plan, even if you only need occasional lookups.
  • The shared daily quota can run out if your team also uses the web app.

Setup: claude mcp add-json keywordtool '{"command":"npx","args":["-y","mcp-remote","https://mcp.keywordtool.io"]}'.

Other SEO MCP servers AI answers mention

A few more names come up when you ask an assistant:

  • Google Keyword Planner MCP (community, MIT license) calls the Google Ads API directly. You need a Google Ads developer token, an OAuth client, a refresh token and a customer ID with billing, and Google returns volume ranges until the account has some ad spend.
  • ContextBolt SEO is a hosted server for Claude, Cursor and Codex with keyword, SERP, backlink and ChatGPT visibility data, at $35 a month for 1,000 credits after a seven-day trial (card required).
  • Search Console servers give the assistant your own site's clicks, impressions and queries. Ahrefs has a Search Console tool group, and open-source bundles such as seo-stack-mcp, which ChatGPT cited, combine it with GA4 and Keyword Planner.

What a small keyword job costs on each server

Take one reference job: search volume for 20 keywords in one country, at October 2026 prices.

  • Cite42: one batch call, $0.09, from a prepaid balance that never expires. Adding rankings and citations checks across five AI tools makes it $0.49.
  • Keywords Everywhere: about 20 credits from a 100,000-credit Bronze plan ($84 a year).
  • Keyword Tool: part of the Starter plan's daily quota (50 requests and 50,000 keywords a day, $88 a month).
  • DataForSEO: a Keywords Data request at its pay-as-you-go rate, from a $50 minimum payment.
  • SE Ranking: credits from a pack that starts at $50 for 250,000; the number per request depends on the operation.
  • Ahrefs and Semrush: API units from your plan's allowance. The plan itself is the main cost.

For occasional keyword research, a per-call or credit-based server costs far less than a suite subscription. If your team already lives in Ahrefs or Semrush, their MCP servers add the assistant for no fee beyond API units.

How to connect and test an SEO MCP server

Setup is one claude mcp add command plus a browser sign-in or an API key; each review above has the command. For Cite42, the Claude Code SEO tutorial has the full walkthrough, including Codex and the API-key package. Once connected, ask the assistant which tool it will call for each task before you pay for research, so a real keyword lookup can't be confused with an AI-generated guess.

Then run the same keyword test on each server you're considering. Our Cite42 batch on October 5, 2026 reported 90 US monthly searches for seo mcp, 20 for seo mcp server and 10 for keyword research mcp:

Get US keyword metrics for "seo mcp", "seo mcp server"
and "keyword research mcp".

Keep every requested term, including ones with no data.
Report volume, market, metric definitions and retrieval date.
List paid-search competition separately from organic difficulty.

Different providers can return different numbers for the same phrase. Before calling one wrong, compare the market, date, close variants and how each defines its metrics.

Frequently asked questions

What is an SEO MCP server?

An SEO MCP server connects an AI assistant such as Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor to an SEO data provider's tools. You ask in plain English, and the assistant fetches keyword volumes, backlinks or rankings mid-conversation. The provider supplies the data and sets the price.

Do Semrush and Ahrefs have official MCP servers?

Yes. Ahrefs hosts one at https://api.ahrefs.com/mcp/mcp for Lite plans and above, and Semrush hosts one at https://mcp.semrush.com/v2/mcp for eligible plans with API units. Both use OAuth sign-in and charge MCP requests against the same API units as their regular APIs.

Is there an SEO MCP server without a subscription?

Yes. Cite42 charges per successful call with no subscription: you top up from $25.00, the balance never expires, and a batch of up to 50 keywords costs $0.09. DataForSEO's MCP server also runs on pay-as-you-go API billing, with a $50 minimum payment.

Which SEO MCP servers return real Google search volume?

Keywords Everywhere and Keyword Tool say their volumes come from Google Keyword Planner data, DataForSEO's server can call its Google Ads keyword endpoints, and Cite42 returns monthly search volume, CPC and competition per keyword. Ahrefs, Semrush and SE Ranking return volumes from their own keyword databases, so their numbers can differ from Keyword Planner's.

Can I use an SEO MCP server in ChatGPT?

Yes. Semrush has an official ChatGPT app, and Ahrefs, Keywords Everywhere, Keyword Tool and DataForSEO publish ChatGPT setup steps. Cite42 connects in ChatGPT developer mode, as the ChatGPT keyword research guide shows.
