SerpApi alternatives: cheaper SERP data, AI Overviews at scale, and AI assistant answers

Six SerpApi alternatives compared on price per thousand searches, Google AI Overview and AI Mode handling, ChatGPT and other AI answers, and legal cover.

Ten identical blue links fanned out like a hand of cards

SerpApi is the SERP API most developers try first, and for structured Google results it still does the job. The reasons to look at alternatives in 2026 are specific. Its price per search is the highest in the category once you leave the free tier. An AI Overview that needs the follow-up fetch counts as two searches, so a thousand overviews cost $20 on the $150 plan. And SerpApi has no ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini engine at all, which matters if the reason you want search data now is to see what AI assistants say.

This guide compares six alternatives for three jobs: cheaper Google results, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode at scale, and answers from the AI assistants themselves. SearchApi, ScrapingBee, Bright Data and DataForSEO are SERP and scraper APIs; cloro is a scraper built around the AI apps; Cite42 is a pay-per-call API for brand visibility in AI answers rather than raw results. Cite42 publishes this guide. We checked every vendor's pricing and documentation pages on November 5, 2026, and did not run paid tests through the other products.

The best SerpApi alternatives for different jobs

  • SearchApi: the closest drop-in, at a third of SerpApi's price per search, with ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Mode, AI Overviews and Copilot behind the same endpoint.
  • DataForSEO: the lowest unit prices for Google results, AI Mode and AI Overviews, and a separate line of ChatGPT and Gemini scrapers, on a $50 minimum deposit.
  • ScrapingBee: Google, ChatGPT and Gemini answers from one credit pool, cheap from the $99 plan up.
  • Bright Data: $1.50 per thousand requests pay as you go, city-level targeting, and ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot scrapers with async delivery.
  • cloro: a scraper designed around the AI apps, returning sources, shopping cards, ads and fan-out queries, with Google Search as a side dish.
  • Cite42: when what you wanted from SerpApi was to know whether AI answers mention and cite your brand, including Claude, with no plan to buy.

Per-thousand figures are computed from each vendor's published plan price divided by the included volume. They are list prices before tax, and the vendors change them.

Why people leave SerpApi, and what it still does well

SerpApi's strengths are breadth of engines beyond Google, a mature location API with GPS-level targeting, a free hour-long cache, and a U.S. legal shield that covers scraping claims up to $2 million from the $150 Production plan up. It is also the vendor Google sued in December 2025; a court dismissed the case in July 2026 and Google refiled, and SerpApi in turn sued SearchApi in January 2026. None of that stops the service, but a buyer should know the category is in litigation.

The complaints are price and AI coverage. Production works out at $10 per thousand searches, Starter at $25, against $2 to $4 at SearchApi and well under $1 at DataForSEO. AI Overviews cost two searches when the token fetch is needed and only appear for English queries in a limited set of countries. And the question developers now ask, "what does ChatGPT say about this?", has no SerpApi engine behind it.

SearchApi: the widest set of AI engines behind one endpoint

SearchApi is the most direct replacement. The same GET /api/v1/search?engine= pattern covers Google with an inline ai_overview, a google_ai_overview engine for lazily loaded overviews, google_ai_mode, chatgpt, gemini, bing_copilot and brave_ai_mode; the Perplexity engine is deprecated. Every AI answer is one request, so there is no two-search surcharge. Plans run from $40 for 10,000 requests ($4 per thousand) through $100 for 35,000 ($2.86), $250 for 100,000 and $500 for 250,000 ($2). Only successful requests are billed, and a legal protection guarantee of $2 million applies from the $100 Production plan.

The ChatGPT engine returns text_blocks, markdown, reference links, web results, character-indexed citations, search queries and the model name, with a truncation flag for long answers. Geo targeting for Google covers location, uule, coordinates and device; ChatGPT takes a country.

Pros

  • A third of SerpApi's price per search and one request per AI answer.
  • ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Mode and Copilot from the same endpoint and response shape.

Cons

  • Perplexity deprecated; no Claude or Grok.
  • Hourly cap of 20% of your plan's credits; no independent reviews to speak of yet.

DataForSEO: the lowest unit prices with a $50 deposit

DataForSEO is a pay-as-you-go data vendor rather than a plan. You deposit at least $50, the balance never expires, and every task has a price. Google organic results cost $0.0006 per page in the standard queue, $0.0012 in priority and $0.002 live, and loading the asynchronous AI Overview doubles the base price. Google AI Mode is $0.0012 to $0.004 per page. Its LLM Scraper returns the consumer ChatGPT or Gemini answer for a keyword at $0.0012 to $0.004 per page, and its LLM Responses API sends your prompt to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity through their official APIs for $0.0006 plus the provider's token cost. A separate LLM Mentions database of collected answers costs $0.10 per request plus $0.001 per row.

The trade is engineering effort. Standard tasks are asynchronous with a 45-minute target, live calls cap at 30 concurrent tasks, and the MCP server is a generic request proxy rather than purpose-built tools. For a team that already runs a pipeline, it is the cheapest data on this page.

Pros

  • Lowest unit prices for Google, AI Mode and AI Overviews, with no subscription.
  • Both ways to get an AI answer, scraped app or official API, under one account.

Cons

  • $50 minimum deposit, queue-based pricing tiers, and a steep API surface.
  • LLM Mentions covers only ChatGPT and AI Overviews, and the refresh cadence is not published.

ScrapingBee: SERP and ChatGPT answers from one credit pool

ScrapingBee is a general scraping API with dedicated Google, ChatGPT and Gemini endpoints. Plans start at $19 for 75,000 credits and $49 for 250,000, with $99 for a million. A Google search costs 10 credits for the light version or 15 for the full one, and a ChatGPT or Gemini answer 15 credits, so a thousand ChatGPT answers cost $3.80 on the $19 plan and $1.49 on the $99 plan. The ChatGPT endpoint returns text, markdown, citations, ads and the search queries, and takes a country code and a web-search flag; it is explicitly logged out, and ScrapingBee says it cannot return citations or ads every time. AI Mode works on mobile only.

Pros

  • One credit pool for pages, Google results and AI answers; cheap at the $99 plan.
  • Failed requests are not charged.

Cons

  • Country-level geo only; no Perplexity or Copilot.
  • Citations and ads are best effort, and credits expire monthly.

Bright Data: volume pricing and async delivery

Bright Data sells a SERP API at $1.50 per thousand requests pay as you go, or $499 a month for 380,000, with a free tier of 5,000 requests a month and city-level targeting through uule. Google AI Overviews need a browser flag that adds 5 to 10 seconds, and Bright Data says overviews appear on roughly 15 to 20 percent of queries, so the real cost per captured overview is several times the per-request price. Its Web Scraper library adds ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot scrapers at $1.50 per thousand records, each starting a fresh session and returning answer text, citations, search sources and the model. Requests that take longer than a minute return a snapshot id and finish asynchronously, with delivery to S3, Snowflake or a webhook.

Pros

  • Cheapest ChatGPT and Perplexity answers at volume, with Copilot too.
  • Enterprise delivery and compliance story.

Cons

  • Async workflow for AI answers; Gemini not available in Europe; Grok unavailable and no Claude.
  • Reviews mention disputes over unused deposits.

cloro: built for AI answers first

cloro inverts the usual SERP vendor: its core product is scraping the consumer ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Google AI Mode and AI Overview apps, and Google Search is one more endpoint. A Google search costs 3 credits plus 2 for the overview, a ChatGPT answer 5, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Mode 4. Plans are monthly credit subscriptions: a free tier of 500 credits, $30 for 37,500, $100 for 250,000, so a Google search with its overview costs about $4 per thousand on Lite and $2 on Hobby. Answers come back in one shape across engines, with sources, inline citation pills, brand entities, shopping cards and ads, and an async endpoint takes batches of 500. There is no Claude, no pay as you go, and credits expire each month. The AI visibility APIs guide covers it in more detail.

Cite42: brand visibility in AI answers, not raw results

Cite42 is a different kind of tool, and it belongs here for one reason: a growing share of people typing "SerpApi alternatives" are not after ten blue links. They want to know whether ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews mention their brand for a buyer's question, and what they cite. Cite42 does that measurement for you. Send a prompt and a list of brands, and it returns which brands each answer named, in what order, and the cited sources, with the parsing already done. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are queried through their official APIs with web search on, Perplexity through its own search, and AI Overviews from live Google results; trackers can also capture the ChatGPT app itself. Its Keyword Rankings tool checks a site's position in Google's top 100 for up to five keywords at $0.09 per keyword, which covers the rank-tracking case without a SERP plan.

There is no subscription. You top up from $25.00, the balance never expires, and you pay from $0.01 per AI tool only when a call succeeds: $0.20 for a check across all five tools. A verified signup includes $1.00 of credit. The same tools run over MCP in Claude, ChatGPT, Codex and Cursor, and the REST API is described in an OpenAPI spec.

  -d '{
"query": "What is the best SERP API for tracking Google rankings?",
    "url": "https://www.example.com/serp-api",
    "fullSweep": true
  }'

Pros

  • Brand mentions, positions and citations already parsed, across five AI tools including Claude.
  • No plan, no deposit beyond $25.00, and MCP for use inside AI assistants.

Cons

  • Not a SERP API: no organic listings, ads or People Also Ask.
  • Five AI tools; no Copilot or AI Mode.

Which alternative fits which job

  • Cheaper Google results, same workflow. SearchApi, then DataForSEO if you can live with a deposit and queues.
  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode at scale. DataForSEO for unit price, SearchApi for one request per overview with resolved links, Bright Data for city targeting.
  • ChatGPT and other AI assistant answers as raw data. SearchApi for structure, Bright Data or ScrapingBee for cost, cloro for shopping cards and ads.
  • Whether AI answers mention your brand. Cite42, which also covers Claude and needs no plan.
  • A legal shield for scraping Google. SerpApi from its $150 plan and SearchApi from its $100 plan both offer one; the others place compliance on the customer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest SerpApi alternative?

For Google results, DataForSEO at $0.0006 to $0.002 per page with a $50 deposit, or SearchApi at $2.86 per thousand on its $100 plan. ScrapingBee's $19 plan gives about 5,000 light Google searches. SerpApi's $25 plan works out at $25 per thousand.

Which SerpApi alternatives return ChatGPT answers?

SearchApi, ScrapingBee, Bright Data, cloro and DataForSEO's LLM Scraper all return the consumer ChatGPT answer. Cite42 queries ChatGPT through OpenAI's API and parses brand mentions and citations for you, and can capture the ChatGPT app in trackers. SerpApi has no ChatGPT engine.

Does any SERP API cover Claude?

Among raw-answer scrapers, none: Claude's consumer app requires a login. DataForSEO's LLM Responses and Cite42 both query Claude through the official API; Cite42 returns a brand check on Claude for $0.06.

Google sued SerpApi in December 2025; the court dismissed the case in July 2026 and Google filed again. SerpApi and SearchApi both offer a U.S. legal shield on their mid-tier plans. Every other vendor here puts compliance with Google's and the AI platforms' terms on the customer. None of this is legal advice.

Try the job you actually have

If you need Google results, start a SearchApi free account and run your top queries. If you need to know what AI answers say about your brand, create a free Cite42 account with $1.00 of starter credit and run a five-tool citations check from the dashboard or your MCP client.
