How to track AI visibility with Claude and Codex

Alexander
Founder, Cite42

Use practical prompts to create a Cite42 tracker in Claude or Codex, understand the returned data, and turn saved AI visibility results into reports.

Checking your brand in an AI chat tells you what appeared once. To see what changes, you need repeated checks and saved results. With Cite42 connected to Claude or Codex, you can create a tracker and compare results later.

Cite42 runs the scheduled checks and stores the history. Your assistant explains the results or builds a report from them. The CRM brands and results below are fictional; costs use Cite42’s current price table.

Create a tracker draft

Follow the MCP setup guide, then choose buyer questions that don’t already name your brand. Keep the wording stable across runs. For rankings, include your own brand alongside the competitors.

You ask your AICreate a weekly rankings tracker called “Acme CRM weekly visibility”. Track Acme CRM, Rival CRM and Legacy CRM using ChatGPT and Perplexity.Use these prompts:1. best startup CRM2. Which startup CRM is quickest to set up?3. What CRM should a small sales team use?Schedule it for Monday at 09:00 Europe/London. Show me the saved setup and cost per run, but leave it in draft.

Creating a draft is free and doesn’t run the prompts. Cite42 returns the saved setup, status and price estimate for you to review.

Each tracker follows one measurement on a weekly or monthly schedule. Rankings record brand mentions; citations record sources surfaced by web search. To track both, create separate trackers and review both costs.

Approve the recurring cost

Check the saved prompts, models and timezone. Activation authorizes future scheduled runs at your accepted maximum until you pause the tracker.

You ask your AIActivate “Acme CRM weekly visibility” with a maximum of $0.24 per run on the saved weekly schedule.

The response also includes your balance and funding outlook. If a future estimate exceeds your maximum, Cite42 pauses before making a provider call. Editing the tracker returns it to draft for another review.

Ask what changed

Reading stored reports is free. Cite42 returns results by prompt, changes, check statuses, sample times and costs. This example compares one prompt across two runs.

You ask your AICompare the latest two saved runs for “Acme CRM weekly visibility.” Match prompts and surfaces, flag failures and explain mention changes. Don’t start a new run.

It’s a small sample. I’d watch the next runs before treating it as a trend.

Position means order of first mention among your tracked brands, not a Google ranking. Count successful answers when calculating mention rates, and show failed checks separately. A missing mention and a failed check are different results.

Rankings show a change without establishing its cause. To investigate cited sources, request a separate citation check and review its cost.

Build a report from the saved data

Ask your assistant for the comparison you need, whether that’s a chat summary or an HTML report. Cite42 supplies the measurements; the assistant writes the report using your client’s capabilities.

You ask your AIBuild an HTML report from these saved runs. Show mentions by prompt and surface, dates and changes. Separate failed checks from zero mentions and include the values behind each chart. Don’t make more paid calls.

At the next review, compare the same prompt and AI surfaces again.

Check the displayed values against the saved results before sharing. An HTML file needs hosting and a refresh process if you want it to update automatically. The assistant can help build those too.

MCP and API access let you reuse the same data in a conversation, client update or custom dashboard. We expect more reporting to work this way as assistants improve. A shared dashboard still saves setup when a team needs the same view every week.

Pause when you’re done

You ask your AIPause “Acme CRM weekly visibility.” Keep the results so I can ask you about them later.
Cite42Pauses the tracker

These controls also work through the REST API and Cite42 dashboard. The tracker docs cover manual runs, edits and reactivation.

Compare the cost with a dashboard subscription

Our three-prompt example costs $0.08 per prompt, or $0.24 per run on ChatGPT and Perplexity. Weekly runs average about $1.04 a month (52 runs a year). A citation tracker for the same set adds $0.24 per run.

Those estimates assume successful checks at the current rates. Credits have a $25 minimum top-up, so the monthly usage estimate isn’t the minimum purchase. Your assistant subscription and report maintenance are separate costs.

A managed dashboard includes a reporting workflow. On September 22, 2026, OtterlyAI’s monthly plans listed Lite at $29 for 15 prompts, Standard at $189 for 100 and Premium at $489 for 400, with daily tracking across four engines. Other engines were add-ons; Standard also included API and MCP access. Peec AI’s Starter plan listed 50 prompts, three models and daily tracking.

Those plans cover more than this small weekly job. Compare the same workload and collection method. Pay-per-use suits occasional monitoring in your assistant; a subscription can pay off when your team uses its coverage and shared reports regularly.

What the tracker measures

Cite42 measures provider API answers and, for Google AI Overviews, search-provider data. These samples don’t reproduce every logged-in chat or measure your share of all AI users. The methodology explains those limits.

Scheduled runs request fresh measurements. Keep prompts, brands and surfaces stable, note configuration changes and review several runs before calling something a trend. More visibility alone doesn’t establish more revenue.

Keyword research can help choose topics, but Google search volume isn’t AI chat volume. Create a Cite42 account and start with a few buyer questions whose results would change what you do next.
